about images

photographer
Richard Helfand created baseballpixels.com to merge two life-long passions: baseball and photography. A self-taught photographer, he began shooting in 1975 and has continued to develop his skill as a hobby ever since. His favorite subjects are travel and sports.

By making his photography available through this site, he hopes many others will be able to share his appreciation and excitement for all that is the game of baseball.

He welcomes feedback from all – photographers, admirers of fine and photography, and of course fans of the game of baseball.

baseball images
To provide fans with the best perspectives on the game, we seek shots from a variety of vantage points. The baseballpixels.com library includes both wide-angle shots within stadiums, as well as finely-detailed close-ups on the action.

We have updated our image galleries with photos from the 2003 and 2004 Major League Baseball® seasons, as well as the MLBTM All-Star Game®, the American League Championship Series®, the National League Championship Series®, the World Series®, and other milestone events, including opening days at several new ballparks. Check back regularly for the latest updates, or add your name to our mailing list and we will notify you when new images are available.

equipment
All images on this site were taken with one of four professional SLR cameras:

• Nikon D1X – an award-winning digital camera with noted color accuracy and high-speed capability that is conducive to sports photography. Used together with Nikon Capture software, this camera enables us to produce 10-megapixel images.
• Medium-format Hasselblad H1 with a digital back for shooting fine detail in daylight settings, with image resolution up to 16 megapixels.
• Canon EOS 1Ds – a breakthrough camera that raises the bar on digital image quality with an 11-megapixel sensor.
• Canon EOS 1D MarkII – the gold standard for sports photography. This camera achieves 8-megapixel resolution, while shooting at a continuous speed of 8.5 frames per second.

digital enhancement
Adobe Photoshop or Phase One software is used to correct color and contrast, crop and make other minor adjustments, as well as to size the photos for printing. All in all, we strive to ensure that our photos retain the integrity and composition of the original images – reflecting the true action and excitement of the ballpark.

Based on feedback, we also have developed a selection of images that reflect a more interpretive “art” feel. These include multiple-image collages, and images that have been enhanced with artistic filters such as painting effects.

prints

baseballpixels.com offers a truly unique product:
• exceptional images offering fine detail and close-up views of the game
• large, museum-quality
giclée prints on specialty fine-art papers, produced to the most exacting standards
• archival quality production that ensures you can display and admire special moments and players in baseball history for years to come

baseballpixels.com prepares a small number of prints for fan conventions and other shows. Otherwise, all prints are produced to your specifications at the time of your order.

about giclée prints
Giclée refers to an advanced printmaking process that typically uses 8- or 12-color ink-jet printers to reproduce digital scans on fine-art media. Most often employed by artists who want to produce their work in limited quantities and/or on demand, giclée processes provide better color accuracy and archival quality than many other means of reproduction.

materials
Our museum-quality prints begin with high-resolution digital imagery that is enhanced and enlarged to support large, display-quality prints.

We produce each print to order with the Epson Stylus Photo 2220 or the new state-of-the-art Epson Stylus Pro 4000 Series printer and Epson Ultrachrome inks. These printers enable us to provide prints up to 17x22 inches at 2880 x 1440 dpi resolution, with exceptional color fidelity and archival quality. Under glass, they are estimated to last more than 75 years.

For display-quality images with a museum feel, we use only the best specialty art papers.

We use Hahnemühle acid-free fine art papers, including William Turner ArtLine paper, a natural white, mould-made watercolor paper; and Photo Rag PhotoLine paper, a smooth, bright white paper. Both feature 100% rag content for archival quality and specially coated finishes for image sharpness and color gradation.

We also use Epson’s Velvet Fine Art Paper – a unique, museum-quality surface that is a favorite of photographers and artists. This durable, bright-white matte paper has a 100% cotton rag base that is buffered and acid free for exceptional color reproduction and preservation.

special orders
baseballpixels.com is happy to work with you to develop custom prints that fit your needs. Please contact us to discuss alternative sizes, papers, mats and frames, or to photograph a particular player or team of your choice.

ordering and shipping
Use the ‘order’ button on a particular photo to access the on-line order form. Once we receive your order, we will send you a confirmation email within 24 hours and include an estimated shipping date.

All payments are by credit card. A charge by RAH Digital Creations, LLC, will appear on your credit card statement.

In most cases, we produce and ship prints within two working days of receipt of your order and payment. Please note, though, that travel, events, holidays and other factors can extend production time by several days.

Please allow an extra week for matted prints and three weeks for framed prints.

baseballpixels.com uses US Priority Mail to ship prints and matted prints. There is no additional charge for shipping prints and matted prints within the United States. Most deliveries should take two to three days. We will send a confirmation email when your prints have shipped.

We use UPS or FedEx to ship framed prints. A $25 shipping fee applies to all framed prints. We can not ship framed prints to a post office box.

There are no additional costs for standard shipping within the United States. If you wish to have prints shipped outside the United States and/or require another type of delivery service, please contact us for an estimate.

Because we use only specialty art papers, we ship all photos flat. Please use the space provided on the order form to notify us of any special requirements for receiving oversized packages in the mail to ensure they are not exposed to harsh or wet elements.
